Introduction to NYS Forum Online Validation Tool
The NYS Office for Technology and the Office of the State CIO have created state standards to improve the accessibility of state agency web sites for people with disabilities using assistive technology. The NYS Forum has been and continues to be instrumental in providing technical assistance in this effort and continues to work in partnership with the OFT/CIO to educate and support developers. This validation tool is another example of The NYS Forum's ongoing commitment to improving access to government information and services.
In 2004, OFT issued NYS Technology Policy P04-002, Accessibility of State Agency Web-based Intranet and Internet Information and Applications and NYS Mandatory Technology Standard (MTS) S04-001, Accessibility of State Agency Web-based Intranet and Internet Information and Applications. The Mandatory Technology Standard comprises 14 individual guidelines that must be adhered to, and Policy P04-002 requires State agency Web developers and contractors to validate content prior to posting it on the Web site. NYSMTS SO4-001 is a composite of guidelines adapted from the Worldwide Web Consortium's (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 1.0 and from U.S. Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act.
The NYS Forum Validation Tool will provide the ability to perform a single-page test as well as testing multiple pages of web content. Once testing and remediation is complete, the tester of the content will be able to apply the "Meets Standards for NYS Accessibility Guidelines" image to their web pages.
